The benefits of a genuine wool rug
Choosing the right rug for your home is crucial — a rug has the potential to add effortless style and cosiness while tying all of your furniture together at the same time. Wool rugs come in a huge range of different colours, sizes and piles, which is why we always recommend a fluffy wool rug! They come with a huge range of benefits, including:
- Low maintenance. Wool is naturally stain-resistant due to lanolin, a natural fibre coating that protects the wool from dirt. While wool rugs still need regular vacuuming, they don’t need to be cleaned as frequently as synthetic rugs because they have tiny pockets where dust can be collected rather than sitting on the surface. Of course, we recommend looking after your wool rug to keep it looking fresher for longer.
- Safe for you and your family. Wool produces oils and moisture that make them flame-resistant and have a lower flame spread than synthetic fibres. Wool rugs can even absorb indoor contaminants and purify the air!
- Colourful. Wool fibres can absorb more dyes than other synthetic materials, which means you’ll get more vibrant colours out of a wool rug. Plus, the colours will stay bright longer than other rug materials, even after multiple washes.
- Hypoallergenic. Wool is also naturally hypoallergenic thanks to the tiny pockets in the wool that hide dust and pollen. These pockets keep allergens out of your breathing space, so you’ll sneeze less!
- Hard-wearing. Wool rugs are springy and the fibres will always return back to their natural shape, even if they’re stretched more than 35%. This means your wool rug will last for years to come without showing signs of wear and tear.
- Sustainable. Wool is produced by sheep fed on pastures fueled by sunlight — the energy it takes to produce wool is about 1/8th of what is used to produce nylon! Under the right conditions, wool rugs can even be biodegradable or recycled thanks to the all-natural fibres.
With superior qualities including hypoallergenic materials, hard-wearing designs and low maintenance requirements, a durable wool rug is a stylish addition to any home. Whether you’re decorating your living room, dining room or bedroom, we’ve got the right rug for your space. FAQs about wool rugs
- Are your rugs 100% sheep’s wool?
Most of our wool rugs feature a polyester blend so we can keep costs down for our customers. Both wool and polyester are highly durable rug materials and polyester is relatively inexpensive, so our rugs don’t cost as much as 100% wool rugs. Because of this fantastic blend of materials, we can offer rugs in beautiful, intricate designs and colours.
- Are wool rugs high maintenance?
No! Wool is coated in lanolin which naturally repels stains and dust mites, so they normally don’t need a lot of maintenance. Wool also has tiny pockets that catch dust, so your rug will not appear dirty on the surface.
If you treat a wool rug right, it can last for a lifetime. We recommend vacuuming your wool rug once every couple of weeks to remove any dirt or dust that has built up on your rug, or hang it up on the clothesline and beat it with a broom. This will help remove any stubborn debris.
- Do wool rugs shed?
In the first few months, you might notice that your wool rug appears to be shedding. Don’t panic — this is totally normal and it won’t last forever. If you vacuum your rug twice weekly for the first few months, you will notice that the shedding will eventually stop.
If your wool rug is fringed, start vacuuming from the centre of the rug and avoid the edge to prevent damage. Otherwise, you can vacuum your rug as normal.
- What should I do if I spill something on my wool rug?
Wool is naturally water-resistant, but that doesn’t mean it’s impervious to stains. If you spill something like coffee or wine on your wool rug, it’s important to act fast and use a dry paper towel to absorb the liquid. Once the coffee or wine stops appearing on the paper towel, grab a clean, damp cloth or sponge and pat down the area.
You might also use some wool laundry detergent on the cloth — this is gentle enough to help remove the stain.
The important thing is to dab the stain, never rub it. Rubbing the stain can cause the liquid to spread further around the rug, making it an even bigger problem!
- What happens if someone walks mud through my wool rug?
Don’t panic if mud gets on your wool rug — just let it dry and then take the rug outside, hang it on the clothesline and beat it with a broom. This will help remove the dry dirt from the rug. We recommend vacuuming the rug, too, to remove any stubborn grains of dirt.
- Can wool rugs be dry-cleaned?
Absolutely. Most dry cleaners can clean a wool rug for you without damaging the weaving or pile. If you’re worried about them damaging the rug, talk to your dry cleaner first and make sure they’re confident about washing your rug.
- How do I keep my wool rug looking fresher for longer?
To keep your wool rug looking fresh for years to come, we recommend implementing a “no shoes” rule in your home, or at least in the room where you’ll be displaying your rug. This will help stretch the time between essential rug cleaning.
We also recommend rotating your rug seasonally to prevent excessive wear patterns and fading from the sunlight. This will ensure your rug is even.
- Are there any spots where you don’t recommend placing a wool rug?
Generally speaking, we recommend placing a wool rug in primarily dry rooms like living rooms, nurseries, playrooms and bedrooms. We don’t recommend placing a wool rug in damp or humid areas like kitchens, bathrooms and basements — these areas are prone to mould issues.
If you live in an area with high humidity, we recommend investing in a dehumidifier. While wool is a natural humidifier, it might need an extra hand if your home is often humid.
- Are wool rugs suitable for high-traffic areas?
Wool rugs are naturally durable and will easily bounce back from heavy foot traffic. Their natural moisture and stain resistance make them a great choice for high-traffic areas like hallways, living rooms and more. They’re also easy to maintain with regular cleaning, so you won’t have to worry about them losing their beauty under constant foot traffic.
For a more affordable option, discover our range of synthetic rugs. Synthetic rugs are designed to stand up against wear and tear around the house — plus, they’re incredibly easy to clean and can be placed directly in your washing machine for a quick scrub.
